How to source rennet: a supplier comparison and buying checklist

A useful quotation starts with a clear specification. Use this checklist to compare rennet suppliers on the same basis, then ask the shortlisted businesses to confirm suitability, availability and commercial terms.

1. Explain what you make

Describe the cheese, milk source and production scale. Tell the supplier whether this is a new formulation, a trial or a replacement for an existing coagulant. If you have a current specification, ask which details the supplier needs to assess an alternative.

2. Ask for a comparable product specification

  • Product name, manufacturer and coagulant type.
  • Liquid, powder or tablet form and available pack sizes.
  • Declared activity, units and test method, where provided.
  • Recommended application, storage conditions and shelf life.
  • Current technical data sheet and the documents needed by your business.

Do not assume that two products with the same pack size are equivalent. Ask the supplier to explain how its recommendation applies to your process; compare any trial results before changing production.

3. Separate a trial request from a supply quotation

For a trial, ask about sample availability, sample cost, shipping and the information needed to evaluate the product. For routine supply, state the estimated quantity and frequency. A sample request does not establish an ongoing supply commitment.

4. Put destination and timing in the brief

Give the delivery country and, where needed, the delivery location. Ask about minimum order, lead time, shipping responsibility, quote currency, quote validity and payment terms. Confirm which charges are included rather than comparing headline product prices alone.

5. Check the supplier and its evidence

Confirm the business identity and whether you are dealing with a manufacturer, distributor or retailer. Ask for current evidence of any certification your purchase requires, and check that it covers the product and facility concerned. A paid RennetAtlas profile is not product certification.

6. Compare the replies
